Web22 okt. 2002 · Abstract Vortices were imprinted in a Bose-Einstein condensate using topological phases. Sodium condensates held in a Ioffe-Pritchard magnetic trap were transformed from a nonrotating state to one with quantized circulation by adiabatically inverting the magnetic bias field along the trap axis. WebRadial, or transverse, confinement of particles in the trap is provided by a solenoidal magnetic field applied along the trap axis. Charged particles in the trap travel in the direction of the magnetic field lines and hence cannot escape outwards, or perpendicular to the field. ALPHA uses a Penning trap variation called a Penning-Malmberg trap.
